The Simple Present Tense is used to describe a situation perceived as stable (not indicating beginnings or ends or implying the possibility of change). Example: Today is a lovely day. Nothing in this sentence suggests the weather might change. The situation is presented as a true stable fact.
In contrast the Present Progressive Tense (Present Continuous Tense) describes a portion of the event occurring at the moment of speaking. The action in this event is going on and is conceived as something that is happening right now (not necessarily before or after). Example: Right now you are answering computerized questions.
